Paris and Haussmann in the XIXth : birth of a city - Virtual tour

Description

In the 1850s, in less than twenty years, Haussmann profoundly changed the face of Paris. The Opera by Charles Garnier, an unknown architect at the time, is the perfect example of the official architecture of the Second Empire, but Baron Haussmann's urban planning is much more than that. Carried by the hygienic concerns in vogue at the time, he demolished entire sections of the medieval city to bring it up to the level of the most modern capitals of the time: opening of large straight roads to make traffic flow more smoothly, creation of sidewalks for pedestrians, construction of a gigantic sewage system (and drinking water supply), landscaped parks, construction of new and comfortable buildings with well-defined architecture...

Our current Paris is still a Haussmannian city, deeply marked by the "touch" of this astonishing, visionary and sometimes contested urbanist.

With archival images and photos, you can walk through kilometers of streets and avenues without the slightest fatigue!

L’Echappée Belle is a company of tour guides and cultural mediators based in Paris.
