Guided by the lecturer Ania Guini-Skliar, the stained-glass windows of the Saint-Denis Basilica won’t have any secrets left for you !
Abbot Suger, the abbot of Saint-Denis, started to rebuild the abbatial church in 1140. He decided quite early to give an important place to light during the works. The oldest windows of the Basilica were installed during the XIIth century.
The will of the abbot was to create a « light temple » by enhancing the beauty of the stained-glass windows thanks to the gothic architecture. The bleu de Saint-Denis or bleu de Chartres, which is a renowned stained-glass color is, by the way, made in Saint-Denis !
During the french Revolution several stained-glass windows were destroyed. They were then replaced by glass walls during the XIXth century.
This visit, in the gothic art masterpiece which is the Saint-Denis Basilica, presents the whole history of stained-glass windows in Saint-Denis : the materials, the techniques, the symbolically charged iconography linked to history as much as to religion…
Ania Guini-Skliar is a guide-lecturer, historian of art, she has a master of advanced studies in History and a doctor’s degree in History of Art. Stained-glass windows are one of her favorite themes not to say her passion !
