During this guided visit you will discover the backstage of Printemps department store. From the underground to the gardened rooftop, passing by the Art Deco cupola.
It’s in 1865 that Jules Jaluzot, then a young businessman, and his wife decide to create « Grands Magasins du Printemps". Even though boulevard Haussmann wasn’t an ideal location, because of the ongoing works of Palais Garnier and the noisy and turbulent Saint-Lazare station, they want to make it become the Temple of Fashion.
A rowdy adventure starts : The Printemps will know a century of societal, technical and architectural revolutions. The crowd loves discovering the last innovations presented by the shopping center : the first hydraulic lifts and electrical lighting, the glass and iron architecture etc. The Printemps went through wars and fire and was the theater of many inventions.
Its facade, which has the title of « Monument Historique » (Historical monument), hides the tens of technicians and craftmen who work every day for the maintenance of this group of 4 structures shared on 48 levels and more than 90 hectares of total surface.
During this visit you will learn about the architecture, the history and the operation of the place. You will see one of the best views of Paris on the zinc rooftop, then you will go down all the way to the underground galleries where you will discover the machinery and the carpenter’s and mirror maker’s workshops.
You will see all the main pieces of the Printemps like the floating stairs, the original gates of the building, the hidden side of the glass dome…all that passing through secret and private passages.
From sky to underground, from the Second Empire to the 21st cnetury, from neo-classicism to the contemporary era, this visit will make you see the whole of the Printemps luxury temple.
You can also check the visit of the Galeries Lafayette.
